WORKING BARN FIRE (LINCON CO.)
Sunday, July 6, 2008
-
At about 1500hrs Lincoln County was advised of a severe thunderstorm warning. About 5 minutes later, Station 20 Base 1 and 2 along with Boger City was dispatched to a barn fire in 20's first due. Engine 201 checked en-route with heavy black smoke showing from Base 1. On 201's arrival they found a fully involved barn filled with hay on fire and called for an additional tanker from Station 3(East Lincoln). Engine 201's crew pulled a 2 1/2" Line to make an attack but the weather turned on them. With heavy amounts of lighting, blinding rain and 50MPH winds, command called the crews back and slowed all incoming units to routine traffic for safety of firefighters until the storm died down. Command then determined it would be best to pull the roof from what was left and let the fire burn itself out since there was no other structures threatened.
While this call was going on we were dispatched to several other storm related calls and had assistance from Station's 21(High Shoals) and 31(Lucia).

MVA GREEN ROAD (GASTON CO)
Friday, July 4, 2008
-
At 2000 hours, Engine 201 and QRV 208 were dispatched to a MVA on Green Road with possible entrapment. Firecenter advised while en route that Med Center Air was en route and needed a LZ set-up.  Engine 201 advised to have Station 31 (Lucia-Riverbend) to handle the LZ.  Upon arrival, a single vehicle accident (truck vs. tree) was found and entrapment was confirmed.  Asst. Chief Presswood and Firefighter Withers initiated extrication while Captain Cloninger handled patient care and Lieutenant Millsaps and Safety Officer Smith stood by with a charged hand line.  Both doors and roof were removed from the vehicle and the dash and steering column were rolled.  Once the patient was free from the vehicle patient care was turned over to GEMS (Gaston Emergency Medical Services).  The GEMS supervisor arrived on the scene and canceled  Med Center Air and the patient was transported to GMH (Gaston Memorial Hospital) via ground ambulance.  Engine 201 remained on the scene to provide lighting for SHP (State Highway Patrol) for their investigation.  Engine 201 cleared at approximately 22:00.     This was the third MVA of the day for Alexis units. The 2 others involved motorcycles with minor or no injuries. Unfortunately this MVA claimed the life of the driver.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the driver.

FULLY INVOLVED VAN FIRE AT THE COUNTRY CORNER STORE ( GASTON COUNTY )
Thursday, June 26, 2008
-
At 14:18, a knock at the main station's door alerted Alexis firefighters to a van on fire beside the Country Corner Store at the Alexis crossroads. Engine 201 advised Gaston Communications to alert our volunteers and have Engine 203 dispatched from Base 2 due to the van being beside the building. Engine 201 arrived with a crew of three to find the van that was full of store merchendice, fully involved with flames threatening the roofs overhang of the store. The crew from Engine 201 pulled the front jump line and made quick work of the fire. Engine 203's crew of four arrived and laddered the building and checked for extension in the store's roof and overhang. Command ( Chief Robinson ) called for a control time at 14:23. The fire was contained to the van, but the vinyl siding on the store at the C/D corner melted due to the heat. Quick response by the Alexis Volunteers saved the store from significant damage, but the van was a total loss. Both Alexis units operated on scene for about an hour.
