Here at Alexis VFD we are proud to say that we serve both Gaston and Lincoln counties. Our fire district covers 38 square miles in these counties, with 16 miles in Gaston and 22 miles in Lincoln. We once heard that fire knows no boundaries and we prove that on every call we are dispatched to. We are a rural fire district with mostly housing developments and several churches as well as some business. But the future is going to bring more and more to this area as people and business move "out to the country" to escape the bigger cities like Charlotte and Gastonia, NC.

Our mutual aid companies consist of East Lincoln Fire Department, Boger City VFD, Denver FD, and Pumpkin Center VFD from Lincoln County and Lucia-Riverbend VFD, Spencer Mountain VFD, High Shoals VFD, Stanley VFD and East Gaston VFD from Gaston County.

We are located about 20 miles west of Charlotte and our current station is located in Gaston County but less than a mile from Lincoln County. We are dispatched by both county 911 Communication centers.

The current members of this Fire Department would like to thank our original members for all they did and accomplished.

How it all began:

In 1960 a group of men met a local lake interested in starting a volunteer fire department in Alexis, NC. From this grew the first official meeting on October 11th, 1960. Our first ever Fire Chief was Ladd Maxwell. Our first fire truck was a 1932 open cab American LaFrance pumper and it was housed in an old unused building near the intersection of Hwy 27 and Alexis High Shoals Rd. We became officially recognized by the Gaston Fireman‚s Association on January 10th, 1961. This same year we purchased a 1953 International dump truck to be used as a tanker it was purchased for $250.00. On October 4th, 1961 the foundation of our present fire station was poured. Looking for a way to raise money for building the station the fireman came together and started operating the Stanley Theatre they began this adventure on December 8th, 1961. The station was completed in July of 1962. We bought our first whistle in February and it was up and running in April 1963. The building was paid off in July 1963 and the Stanley Theatre was closed in October the same year. During this time frame we bought a 1946 Ford-American LaFrance.

June 1st ,1964 Alexis FD was approved for a three mile district by the State of North Carolina. July 16th, 1964 we purchased an old weapons carrier from the Town of Stanley. A 1970 C-750 was purchased on March 9th, 1970 and sent Howe Fire Apparatus company to have a rear body built. It was placed in service in July that year. For a total price of $5,820.00. This truck is called Engine 200 and is no longer in service. On June 24th, 1974 a 1974 Chevrolet was purchased for a tanker and sent to Southern Pump Company to have a body built. This truck is called Tanker 205 and is no longer in service.

In 1978 a fourth bay was added to the original station. We purchased our first air pack in 1979, also this year we joined the N.C. Fireman‚s Association, Fireman‚s Relief Fund, and the Fireman‚s retirement which all became effective in 1980.

In 1988 a C-1000 Ford chassis was purchased for a pumper and sent to FMC to have the rear body built. This truck was called 203 and is no longer in service. In 1994 a 1974 Mack pumper was purchased as an additional pumper and was called 204 and is no longer in service. In 1996 a 1997 Spartan cab and chassis was purchased and sent to American Fire Eagle to have rear body built. This truck is the present Engine 200. In 1997 a 1998 Freightliner cab and chassis was purchased and sent to American Fire Eagle to have rear body built. This truck is the present Tanker 203. In 2000 we purchased another Spartan cab and chassis and American Fire eagle built the rear body for this as well and this is the present Engine 201. In 2003 we bought a brush truck and Anchor Richey EVS outfitted this and it our present 207. In 2005 we purchased a 2005 Ford Excursion to use a first responder and command vehicle. This truck was outfitted again by Anchor Richey EVS and it is our present 208.

Where we are now:

In 2005 we bought 7 acres of land in Gaston County to begin the process of replacing our current building.

At the end 2006 we purchased 4.25 acres in Lincoln County to build a sub-station. We also put in an order for a new truck.

March of 2008 we moved into the sub-station. This station is called "Base 2" and we moved Tanker 203 to this station along with Car 20. Tanker 203 has been changed to Tanker 205.
